The Sign of the BULL

Create bull horns from the fingers on your hand and send the message that silently screams "Go Bulls!" First started as a good luck wish for basketball free-throw shooters, the sign of the bull hand signal is today used during basketball games, football games, and other USF events as the premier "Go Bulls" cheering symbol.

ROCKY D. BULL

USF's mascot got its start as an idea for a toy for the bookstore to sell in 1965. From there, Rocky was drawn as a cartoon rendition for the athletic department to use with newsletters, and the rest is history.  Rocky's image was first trademarked in 1974, and then a redesigned version trademarked in 1984. A modern version of Rocky was unveiled in 1996, and on October 31, 2003 an updated look for the Big East-bound Bulls was unveiled at the USF homecoming game against Cincinnati.
THE HERD OF THUNDER MARCHING BAND!

Founded in 1999, the Herd of Thunder has quickly become one of the biggest builders of tradition for the Green and Gold.    At football games the tradition begins with the Herd marching through the Raymond James Stadium South parking lot and entertaining the tailgaters waiting to enter the stadium.  After meeting with the Outback Jr. Bulls Club for a quick concert, the band heads into the stadium, and gets ready to be a part of the winning tradition of South Florida football.

ALMA MATER

The Alma Mater was composed by Wayne Hugoboom, a professor of music, in 1960.  It was originally composed for the opening convocation in September 1960, and  declared the winner of a competition for a USF school song on December 4, 1961.

Hail to Thee, our Alma Mater
May thy name be told,
Where above thy gleaming splendor,
Waves the green and gold.
Thou our guide in quest for knowledge.
Where we all are free
University of South Florida,
Alma Mater, Hail to thee!

Be our guide in truth and wisdom
As we onward go,
May thy glory, fame and honor
Never cease to grow;
May our thoughts and prayers
Be with thee through eternity,
University of South Florida,
Alma Mater, Hail to thee!

THE BULL (NUMBER 8)

No song fires up the Bulls faithful like the Herd of Thunder's biggest hit to date.  Heavy on trumpets and a constant drum beat that gets faster every time it's repeated, the song became a fan favorite when introduced by the band in 2003, but simply didn't have a name.  It was known only by the number it was in the Herd of Thunder's playbook, so fans would often shout to the band "Play #8!!" whenever the crowd needed to be encouraged to make some noise.  The name stuck, and is still known to many fans as #8.  Someone eventually figured out the original name was "The Spaniard," but by that time the band took to calling it "The Bull."

True Bulls immediately put up the Sign of the Bull and whip it around over their heads like a lasso to the rhythm of the drums whenever it's heard.

USF FIGHT SONG

You'll hear the fight song at football and basketball games, and at a variety of other events.   We understand if you can't remember the whole thing, but don't forget to kick in on the chant  at the end (last three lines)!

USF Bulls are we,
we hold our standard upright and free.
For green and gold we stand united,
our beacon lighted and noble to see.

USF Bulls we are,
For USF we'll always be. With all our might
we fight the battle here and now,
and we will win the victory!
